The Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa was founded in 1988 by the initiative of renowned conductor Hiroyuki Iwaki, support from Ishikawa Prefecture and Kanazawa City symbolizing Japanese art, culture and tradition. The Orchestra has more than 110 concerts a year in all major cities through out Japan, and regularly performs abroad: in Europe as well as in South-East Asia and Australia. Although program building is based on Classical and Romantic repertoires, great emphasis has been put on interpretation of contemporary music. Over 90 CDs are released, and "Bizet/Shchedrin's Carmen Suite and Schnittke's Concerto Grosso No.1", "Messages for the 21st Century Vol.2" on DG label received the Record Academy Prize. In 2005, the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa was featured as “Orchestra in Residence” at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in Germany, and appeared at this Festival and La roque d'Antheron International Piano Festival in France in 2008, 2011. The orchestra has also performed as resident orchestra at "La Folle Journee de Kanazawa" in Japan since 2008 (Rene Martin, artistic director), with Anne Queffelec, Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Sayaka Shoji, Michie Koyama, Paul Meyer and more.


Conductors performing with the OEK have included Jean-Pierre Wallez, Oliver Knussen, Nicholas Kraemer, Gunter Pichler, Dmitrij Kitajenko, Toru Yasunaga, Ralf Gothoni, Kurt Masur, Helmuth Rilling, James DePreist, Helmut Winschermann and Vladimir Ashkenazy.

Soloists performing with OEK have included Hermann Prey, Peter Schreier, Philippe Entremont, Karl Leister, Mario Brunello, Yo-Yo Ma, Stanislav Bunin, Salvatore Accardo, Thomas Zehetmair, Jessye Norman, Gidon Kremer and Midori.
